ABOUT ABOUT

Poor communication and teamwork can lead to poorly performing clinical teams and errors that can disrupt even the best patient safety initiatives. TeamSTEPPS® can make a difference for organizations, but only if the organizations and clinicians understand, adopt, and apply the four competencies (Clapper & Ng, 2012).

This course trains teams in essential skills needed to function as effective team members and leaders. Leave with and implementation plan, the resources needed to train others and the knowledge and training required to implement and coach behaviors needed to achieve positive results.

This is the only master training course that includes simulation.

During three-day active-learning workshop, participants will:

  • Learn to incorporate the four TeamSTEPPS® competencies (leadership, communication,  situational awareness, and mutual support) into their clinical environment.
  • Be empowered to speak up and become situational leaders when required to prevent clinical errors from occurring.
  • Engage in simulation experiences to facilitate understanding.
  • Walk away with an institution-wide implementation plan.

How many TeamSTEPPS® courses really provide all of this?

Here is what participants have to say:

"I had previously taken a TeamStepps workshop and came back feeling like I had tools, but could not get “buy in” to use them. I also was unsure of how to fit it into our program. After attending this educational program, I am armed with both education, the means to carry it out, AND a plan! The plan will help us to move the process forward."

"...The team is still talking about it...overall an extraordinary learning experience for me."

"I enjoyed the combination of information along with how to use it and implement it. The interaction among the group as led by [Dr. Clapper] and the various modes of education (lecture, video, sim) fully engaged me and kept my attention."

"I learned how valuable this form of communicating can be in transforming an organization."

Course Objectives:

  1. Describe the four TeamSTEPPS® competencies.
  2. Identify constructive approaches to conflict management.
  3. Use situational awareness (of the environment, the patient and team members) and apply mutual support.
  4. Identify observable behaviors for each of the four TeamSTEPPS® competencies (leadership, communication, situational awareness, and mutual support).
  5. Use effective leadership skills, including developing a shared-mental model, articulating goals, and empowering team members.
  6. Use TeamSTEPPS® communication tools to improve team communication and increase patient safety.
  7. Use effective patient handoff techniques to enhance information exchange during transitions in care.
  8. Identify barriers to teamwork and use strategies to overcome them.
  9. Develop an implementation plan for TeamSTEPPS®.
  10. Participate in simulation to reinforce learning.

You will receive an implementation guide – it is a core value to the course. You will not have to develop it. The course content will include training on how to tailor the plan for your own institute, including training cross-departmental teams.

Course content comes directly from the TeamSTEPPS® pocket guide so clinicians are not overwhelmed with information. Learners understand how to use the pocket guide in the performance of their duties.

All are welcome to attend. Institutions are encouraged to send a team of three (physicians/nurses) from each department to facilitate effective implementation.

Course Facilitator:  Timothy C. Clapper, PhD

Timothy Clapper, PhD has improved the teamwork skills and clinical practice of interprofessional teams at numerous healthcare facilities in the US and abroad.  Using TeamSTEPPS® and his Saturation in Training theory (Clapper & Ng, 2012), he has improved the culture and practice of entire departments and reduced clinical errors.

As Director of Education at the Institute of Medical Simulation and Advanced Learning (iMSAL) in New York City, and Assistant Dean for Simulation and Technology at the University of Texas-Arlington, he developed and facilitated simulation-based instruction for thousands of physicians and nurses. In addition, Health and Hospitals Corporation, the largest public hospital system in the U.S. with oversight of the 11 public hospitals in New York City, saw a significant reduction in clinical errors following his team-based and skill-based courses. The team-based courses that he developed for clinical teams were recognized by the Joint Commission as “best practices.”

Dr. Clapper is the author of more than 25 influential academic and clinical publications, a TeamSTEPPS® Master Trainer, and founder of Brain-Based Learning for Simulation®. He has a Master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction, a Post-Graduate Certificate in Educational Technology, and a PhD in Education.

What is TeamSTEPPS®

TeamSTEPPS®, (Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety) was developed by the Department of Defense Patient Safety Program, in collaboration with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). TeamSTEPPS® is an evidence-based comprehensive teamwork training system designed to improve quality and safety in healthcare. The system is rooted in over three decades of research in high-stress, high-risk industries, such as military aviation.
